404 Interchange – St John’s Sideroad

Council this week ratified the unanimous support for Councillor Thompson’s motion to push for an interchange at Highway 404 and St. John’s Sideroad. This issue has been discussed for over a decade, with many motions, and as the town continues to grow, it has become more urgent. With Aurora’s population expected to reach a minimum of 85,000 by 2051, the current infrastructure is feeling the strain. The Employment Area along the 404 Corridor is expected to add over 6,000 jobs, but currently only has one interchange at Wellington Street East, leading to traffic congestion that we are all seeing. We often hear the Province talk about “Getting Ontario Moving,” and this is exactly the type of project that will help do just that.

An interchange at St. John’s Sideroad would help ease traffic, support local businesses, create jobs, and improve connections within the region. Building this interchange is key to managing the town’s future growth, maintaining economic stability, and improving life for residents. By passing this motion, Council is making it clear that this project must be a priority, and we need to work with the Region to push the Province to make it happen. This interchange should have already been built, and it is crucial for both Aurora and the Region’s economic growth. I look forward to working with the Region, the Province, and sitting down with Minister Sarkaria to get this done. #LeadershipThatGetsThingsDone

  1. The unfortunate reality of highway traffic is that drivers are forced to slow down when additional cars either leave or enter the highway regardless of how many traffic lanes are added at the interchange. In both cases, the right lane is impacted directly whereas the center and left lane are impacted indirectly with cars changing lanes. Adding an additional interchange may also encourage local traffic to use the highway in situations where the short trip does not warrant the usage.
Personally, I think the best way to reduce congestion on highways and local roads is to encourage car sharing, public transportation, and alternate means like bikes and e-scooters, which is a big ask in the current social norms.

  2. Traffic on St Johns at Yonge is going to be horrible; St.Johns will be used as a thoroughfare between the 404 and 400. Ideally, this should be delayed until the Bradford ByPass is completed.

  3. Hello Friends, the St. John’s side road and hwy 404 interchange is truly needed ASAP!

Can we please break ground and get shovels in the ground this summer.

We could use that interchange sooner than later.

Also, can we please have 3 lanes in each direction on the 404. The 2 lanes currently in place are well over due for an upgrade to 3.
    Thank you kindly.

  4. good idea but MTO also have to add a lane extension from aurora road on both SB/NB. otherwise no point to add more traffic earlier or later on the 2 lanes highway.
