Last night at a Special meeting, Council unanimously passed the recommended amendments that I directed staff to bring forward in response to the potential US tariffs… I want to thank Town staff for their hard work in bringing forward these important recommendations to amend our Procurement By-law in response to potential U.S. tariffs. Prioritizing Made-in-Canada products and suppliers is critical to supporting local businesses, protecting jobs, and ensuring Aurora remains economically resilient.
While our procurement outside of Canada is minimal at just 0.7%, that percentage multiplied across 444 municipalities in Ontario adds up to a significant amount. That’s why it’s important not just for Aurora, but for municipalities across the province to follow suit and take action. By working together, we can ensure that our procurement practices support Canadian businesses, Canadian jobs, and a stronger economy for all.
I am proud that once again, here in Aurora, we are one of the first municipalities to act and take the necessary steps to amend our Procurement By-law. Leading by example, we are demonstrating that municipalities can play a key role in supporting local economies while staying aligned with trade obligations.
While we have done a great job with our procurement practices, there is always room for improvement. Updating our bylaw to prioritize Canadian-made goods and services strengthens our approach, ensuring we are doing everything we can to support local suppliers and build economic resilience.
Moving this forward is about standing up for our community, ensuring economic stability, and setting a precedent for others to follow. I look forward to our Council meeting at the end of the month where we will ratify our new and improved procurement bylaw. #LeadershipThatGetsThingsDone
