This week at General Committee, Council approved the recommendation to implement the first phase of our new Green Development Standard. The GDS is a document that works hand in hand with our Official Plan, it sets out mandatory and non mandatory requirements (under five categories; Energy, Water, Ecology, Complete Communities, and Building Waste and Materials) which will apply to all new developments in our community. By adopting this standard, we are fostering more sustainable design by encouraging developments that address “energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions, water quality and efficiency, ecological health, connected communities and building and waste objectives.” This “made in aurora implementation and policy tool” affords us the ability to better ensure that future growth in our Town is not only responsible, appropriate growth that is in line with the vision and priorities of our Official plan but is also environmentally conscious growth that aligns with the principles of sustainable development.
We have seen the impacts of climate change, and we know that we as a community, Province and Country need to do more when it comes to being environmentally conscious especially as it speaks to energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reductions. I am extremely proud that not only are we one of the few Municipalities that have implemented such Green Standards when it comes to all future developments , but that we as a Council continue get things done in supporting the policy goals of our Official Plan: sustainability, climate change objectives, and greenhouse gas (G.H.G) reduction targets.
We are building a community, not only for the present, but for the future generations that will call Aurora home…
The Green Development Standard will be before Council next week for a final vote. Once endorsed and ratified by Council the Standard will go into effect July 1st….
