Bail Reform

I know that every Aurora resident wants to feel safe in their community, and as Mayor, that is one of my top priorities.

That’s why I welcome the federal bail and sentencing reforms that recently passed in Parliament, that will come into force across Canada on July 15, 2026.

The truth is that these are reforms that have been needed for many years. In communities across the GTA and Canada – we have seen too many instances of criminals being released quickly on bail, only to offend again, sometimes with deadly consequences. Violent car thefts, carjackings and home invasions have also had a significant impact on communities across the GTA and York Region in recent years.

The Bail and Sentencing Reform Act (Bill C-14) is a major step in addressing these issues. It makes bail harder to obtain for those accused of repeat and violent offences by, among other measures, placing a stronger onus on the accused to demonstrate why they should be released. The new laws also significantly toughen sentences for repeat and violent crime, including car theft, extortion and violent break and enters.

I also want to commend the efforts of the provincial government, my fellow mayors, police chiefs and associations, as well as many other organizations and elected representatives, for their continued advocacy on this issue. It shows that when it comes to serious matters of public safety, people and organizations of all political stripes and perspectives can come together to get meaningful things done for our communities.

While there is always more work to do, these reforms represent an important step toward strengthening public safety and helping build greater confidence in our justice system. I look forward to continue working with the YRP, Provincial and Federal governments, and local community organizations to ensure Aurora remains one the safest communities in York Region and in Canada.
