On May 26, 2026, Council considered compensation for the final time this term. Staff presented a report and requested direction from Council on next steps.
This issue of compensation had been raised repeatedly by some members of Council seeking an immediate increase of over 42%, a significant raise for themselves.
I was strongly criticized by some of those same members of Council for using Strong Mayor Powers to veto the 42% increase in compensation. I stand by that decision. I listened to residents, who overwhelmingly opposed what they saw as a blatant cash grab, and I acted accordingly.
Supporters claimed the increase was about attracting qualified candidates and ensuring fair compensation. However, when it came time to set pay for the next term – the very justification for these increases – there was silence.
No vote. No action. No follow-through. The staff report was simply received for information.
As a result, Council compensation for the next term remains unchanged, aside from standard cost-of-living adjustments.
So, were these efforts to increase Council Compensation by over 42% truly about improving future council compensation, or simply about increasing pay immediately for current members of Council?
This question goes to the heart of transparency and respect for taxpayers. Residents deserve clear, honest answers.
