Council Update – July 23, 2019

At this week’s Council meeting, the Economic Development Strategic Plan was on the agenda for discussion.  After some debate and discussion, Council unanimously approved the Economic Development Strategic Plan.  This plan was developed through the hard work and with the input of both Council and the Economic Development Corporation Board. For about a year now Council, Board members, along with the consultants worked together with the community in the development of the plan.  Work with the community included a series of one-on one interviews with businesses and stakeholders, focus group sessions and a stakeholder working group session all contributed to the creation of the Economic Development Strategic Plan.

The plan provides a road map for economic growth in the Town with 4 specific goals to achieve

Goal 1: Targeting Growth Sectors and Attracting New Investment Priority Actions

Goal 2: Creating a Competitive Business Climate that Supports Existing Business

Goal 3: Establishing Downtown Aurora as the Destination and Focal Point for the Community

Goal 4: Improving Quality of Life through Heritage, Arts, Culture, Tourism and Community Engagement

Now that Council has approved the plan we are moving to the important stage of implementation. The implementation strategy will be developed to prioritize the actions that the Board and the Town will take. It is expected that the Implementation Plan will be complete and ready by the end of the summer.

I am very excited for our future as we have a plan to grow a diversified economy here in our Town!

Too many times plans have been developed and afterwards just put on the top shelf where they collect dust. This plan is different, this plan is about action and getting things done, and we have the right mix of professionals on the Board that are eager and willing to move things forward so that our Town will achieve long-term employment growth.

I am looking forward to working with the Board, and all our community partners as Aurora grows its economic base
