FCM Conference 2018

For the past few days, I along with a number of colleagues have been attending the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) conference in Halifax. This 5 day conference which ends today is an important opportunity for municipal leaders to not only attend presentations and workshops on policies and initiatives that will impact our communities but also provides the opportunity to meet with leaders from all levels of government; to discuss issues that matter to our community.

As I have at other conferences, I took the opportunity at FCM to meet with leaders of every party to hear their thoughts and their perspectives on how we – federal, provincial and municipal levels of government – can work together to address the important issues facing our communities – from affordable housing, to infrastructure deficits, from climate change to smart cities. It has been an interesting and informative few days and I look forward to bringing back lessons learned to Aurora.

But first, we have one of the more important aspects of the conference – voting in our delegates!! Today we vote on who will be our representatives on FCM, to be our advocate on issues that matter to our communities. It’s important that we have a strong voice at the table to ensure that issues of York Region are heard loud and clear at the federal level!

Those of us attending FCM are unable to attend the Street Festival today (or the Pow Wow yesterday unfortunately!) but I hope it is as fantastic as it always is!! Here’s hoping for good weather and a successful event!
