Grade Separation at Aurora GO Station on Wellington Street

This week, I sent a letter to Metrolinx’s CEO urging immediate approval of the grade separation at Wellington Street and Aurora GO Station. The ongoing delays are unacceptable for such a crucial infrastructure project. This grade separation is vital to maintaining traffic flow on this key east-west artery and supporting Aurora’s growth. Additionally, I will meet with the Minister of Transportation to ensure the provincial government fully understands the importance of this project to our town. Here is my letter to the CEO of MetroLinx……

“Dear Mr. Lindsay,

I am writing to you to emphasize the critical need for Metrolinx to prioritize and approve the grade separation at the Aurora GO Station on Wellington Street. This infrastructure improvement is essential to ensure the long-term viability of both our local transportation network and Metrolinx’s ambitious plans for two-way, all-day, 15-minute GO train service on the Barrie Line.

Wellington Street serves as a vital east-west artery through Aurora, carrying significant volumes of traffic daily. Without the proposed grade separation, the increased frequency of train service will result in prolonged closures of the rail crossing, shutting down this main thoroughfare for up to a quarter of the day. This level of disruption is unacceptable and would have severe implications for residents, businesses, and emergency services in our community.

Furthermore, the Aurora GO station is situated within a Major Transit Station Area (MTSA) that is expected to undergo significant growth and intensification in the next five years. This development will place additional strain on the existing transportation infrastructure and further underscore the urgent need for grade separation to maintain seamless connectivity across our town.

Investing in the grade separation now will not only alleviate current traffic congestion but also support the Town of Aurora in accommodating the growth associated with the MTSA while advancing Metrolinx’s objectives of enhanced transit service. Delaying this project risks compromising both local mobility and regional transit goals.

I urge Metrolinx to take immediate action to prioritize the design and implementation of the Wellington Street grade separation project. The Town of Aurora stands ready to collaborate and support this initiative in any way possible to ensure its timely completion.

Thank you for your attention to this pressing matter. We trust Metrolinx will recognize the importance of this project to our community and the broader regional transit network. I look forward to your response and to working together on a solution that benefits all stakeholders.

Sincerely,

Tom Mrakas Mayor “

  1. I’m very concerned, I read that Metrolinx has decided not to place sound resistant walls alongside homes with tracks at the end of their lots.
If there are trains scheduled to pass every 15 minutes with whistles blowing at the same time, the Aurora population living along these routes will no longer be able to enjoy their backyards.
Is there a solution in the works for this potential issue ?

  2. Has there been any further communications from Metrolinx regarding Grade Separation at Aurora GO Station on Wellington Street?
