  1. Very disappointing that Aurora community are not taking consideration of families with children living in the immediate surrounding of the proposed shelter.

  2. I am wondering what other Aurora sites the Mayor can suggest if this location is now resolvedly off the table?
The Mayor mentions York Region transition beds and York Region outreach but what are the specifics for Aurora?
Surely it is clear that many Aurorans want to step up and contribute to the York Region effort? More details on the concerted efforts in this regard would be helpful.

  3. Honourable Mayor Mrakas,
Thank you very much for your leadership and prudence to veto Dear Councillor Gallo motion.
We are both thankful and relieved, that you finally closed this chapter, and stopped and badminton political volleyball!!
We will continue to support your initiative, making Aurora to be one of the best, and most popular city in live and work in Ontario.

  4. Consideration? You gave it less than 10 minutes of reflection. You commented immediately after Council had spoken and you noted that this site would never happen. It simply took you less then a day to submit a veto. I support democracy (4-3) and would have liked to see how the Region felt about the change and the “possibility” of it coming back. I have been a supporter of most of the actions of Council and you know I am a very frequent attendee. I am simply one of many (and the majority at Council 4-3) that was disappointed after you reversed your support from years past and put the veto in play. So much for a caring community for men who truly need a hand up and not a hand out.

  5. We are lucky to have you as our mayor! Please keep in mind that there’re so many of us stand behind you and support you!!!

  6. I am ok that the mayors used his veto. This veto protected the infrastructure investment already underway. This protected our tax dollar investment which for me is a responsible way to use the veto. I realize many don’t agree with this decision but it appears to me that people are angry just to be angry and not acknowledging that there are other factors at risk that needed to be protected.

  7. Dear Mayor, I sincerely appreciate your leadership and dedication to our community. Your thoughtful decisions reflect your commitment to the well-being of Aurora and its residents. I fully support your efforts and will continue to stand by your decisions for the betterment of our town.

  8. Thank you, Mayor. I appreciate your leadership on this matter. Many residents have felt unheard as we voiced concerns about the proposed shelter. While we fully support helping those in need, we believe it’s important to consider the availability of medical services, job opportunities, and other essential resources. At this time, Aurora may not have the necessary capacity to provide the level of support required, especially for individuals coming from across the region. We hope for a solution that ensures both effective support for those in need and sustainability for our community.

  9. Thank you Mayor Mrakas for making a great and correct decision for the residents of the town!

We all want a peaceful and stable community to take care of our elderly and children. Our government represents us, and our councillors should also represent us. Every decision of our government should prioritize the interests of the residents of the town, and help those who really need help when there is spare capacity.

It is clear that building a shelter in an unsuitable location will lead to few people willing to stay in the shelter in the future due to the imperfect supporting facilities, transportation and other services. In a few years, the shelter will be abandoned, all the initial investment will be wasted, and the taxpayers’ contributions will be ruthlessly wasted. Who will pay for the wrong decision at that time? There is no doubt that the taxpayers will pay the bill. The councillors who made the wrong decision will only start a new round of waste of funds.

We are eager to do good deeds, but what we need to do is to do real good deeds that can really help people, rather than to wear a moral mask and stand on the moral high ground to do good deeds for the sake of doing good deeds. Every decision of our government should play its due value, which includes: whether it brings help to local residents (culture, material), whether it brings real help to the people being helped (life, culture, training, employment, integration into the community, etc.), and whether it brings higher improvement to the values and morals advocated by the town.

Building a shelter is a challenge. The real challenge is the confidence and sense of security of the residents in the Council. I hope that the Council will see this in the future. Let us focus on building our home first. I believe that in the foreseeable future, under the leadership of the government, the residents will no longer lack confidence and security, and will no longer be afraid of challenges. We will welcome and help all guests with a loving heart.

  10. Thank you, Mayor, for your veto! My family and I fully support your decision. We believe this location is unsuitable for an emergency and transitional housing facility due to its isolation and lack of essential social resources, such as community hubs, public transit, and nearby hospitals. For long-term success, it should be placed in a more well-connected area.

  11. Mayor Mrakas, thank you for standing firm in your decision to veto the shelter proposal. Your careful consideration of Aurora’s growth and infrastructure priorities is greatly appreciated. We support your vision for a well-planned and sustainable town.

  12. Thank you Mayor for your veto. You are courageous and doing your best to protect Auroran. You are the one who really cares about people. Shame on those 4 councillors.

  13. If you look at the existing emergency and transitional housing for male, it’s literally in the middle of no where in East Gwillimbury. Why John Gallo wants it in Aurora so much when Aurora has so few homeless people? Don’t really make sense to me.

  14. Dear Mayor Mrakas, Ward 4 and Ward 6 Councillors, thank you for prioritizing the safety of our community, especially for families with children. We truly appreciate you listening to residents and looking out for Aurora. You have our full support!

  15. Very disappointing that Aurora community are not taking consideration of families with children living in the immediate surrounding of the proposed shelter.

  16. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your courageous decision to veto the construction of the shelter. Your leadership has shown deep understanding and commitment to the well-being of our community. We truly appreciate your dedication to protecting our neighborhood, and we will always stand by you.

  17. Thank you, Mayor Mrakas for using your veto power to stand up for the Aurora residents. Your leadership and commitment to our community do not go unnoticed, and we appreciate your dedication to making decisions in the best interest of the people.

  18. Mayor Mrakas is logical and efficient. The motion was already voted down. Time and effort should not be wasted on re-visiting this issue, and is best spent elsewhere. Mayor Mrakas understands this unlike some council members, especially those who do not even reside in Aurora. He will have our utmost support through his endeavours.

  19. Much appreciation to Mayor Mrakas. You are always doing the best service to our Aurora community. You deserve our respect and fully support!

  20. Thank you, Mayor Mrakas for using your veto power to stand up for the Aurora residents. We are all support you March 18 at 5:30
