Council unanimously enacted an Interim Control By-law (ICBL) that will temporarily prohibit development for 1 year on a parcel of land (1289 Wellington Street East) until Town staff can undertake an examination of the appropriate use, density and height for the land. The passing of the ICBL comes after the Minister of Municipal Affairs made modifications to York Region’s Official Plan that allows for a “minimum building height of 12 storeys” with no consultation with the Town of Aurora or York Region.
It truly boggles the mind as to why the Minister cherry picked this specific parcel that is not in a MTSA and make this drastic modification to the OP with consultation.
Council will also be sending a letter, to Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark, and Aurora MPPs expressing Council’s concern with the lack of consultation and communication with the Town and Region, while also seeking an explanation as to why these modifications were specifically made to the parcel of land on Wellington Street East……

Just ask the Province, “Who owns the land?” That will likely indicate why the lands need to have significant development asap without ‘interference’ by the local Council.
