Town Square Illumination Policy

Last night, Council discussed the Town Square illumination policy. This policy is similar to those in many other towns that light up buildings, facades, and structures for special events, celebrations, or times of mourning. Over the years, we’ve received more requests for is type of lighting, but until now, we didn’t have the ability to approve them. With the new building in Town Square, we now have enhanced lighting capabilities.

As always, it’s the Council’s role to set policies for these requests. Staff recommended adding illumination requests to our existing flag policy. This would create guidelines for what the Town, specifically the Clerk’s department, will accept as a request to light up the square in a certain color for a set period, just as the Clerk approves flags to be raised at Town Hall.

I’m pleased that Council voted in favor of approving the illumination policy to better ensure a consistent decision making process for requests to illuminate the Town Square (This will need to be ratified at Council). I’m looking forward to lighting the square as our Town gets ready to celebrate its opening on the 21st!

  1. I hope the city has implemented recommendations from Dark Sky when considering lighting for all municipal buildings and sustainability metrics for new developments. “Light pollution disrupts wildlife, impacts human health, wastes money and energy, contributes to climate change, and blocks our view of the universe.”
Let’s do this for future generations.
