Where Your Money Goes…

As we prepare to deliver the 2025 budget for the Town of Aurora next week, I want to take a moment to explain how your tax dollars are distributed. Many residents may not realize that when you pay your property taxes, the full amount does not stay with the Town. In fact, your residential tax bill is divided into three parts.

For every dollar collected from your tax bill:

  • 38¢ goes to the Town of Aurora to fund essential services like road maintenance, parks, recreation, fire services, and more.
  • 44¢ goes to York Region, which covers services such as policing, public health, social services, and regional transportation.
  • 18¢ goes to Education, which supports our public school system.

Understanding this breakdown is important as it shows that less than half of your tax dollar directly funds the services provided by the Town. The rest is allocated to regional services and education.

As we approach the budget discussions, our goal remains to responsibly manage the portion of your tax dollars we receive while continuing to provide the high-quality services that make Aurora a great place to live. As always I encourage residents to stay informed and engaged as we work together to shape Aurora’s future.

  1. How much new, incremental revenue is collected each year in property taxes? It must be a significant increase as many new homes (and other commercial properties) are added each year. How much does Town of Aurora and York Region spending increase each year? The issue is that Aurora and York Region collects incremental property taxes revenue each year and yet, our property taxes also increase every year.
