Last night, Council, by a 6–1 vote, approved awarding the tender for a long-needed infrastructure project on Yonge Street from the railway overpass south to Bloomington Sideroad — a new multi-use path (MUP) on the west side and a sidewalk on the east side. (Formal ratification at Council in two weeks)
With growth in the south end, we’re seeing more families, more seniors, and more residents trying to get around safely. Right now, that’s not always possible and that’s not acceptable. So we’re fixing it.
This project will improve safety, connectivity, and walkability, linking residents to trails, parks, and local businesses, while supporting active transportation in a growing part of our town.
And just as important, it’s being funded the right way. The Region is contributing up to $2.8 million, and $4.5 million is coming from Development Charges collected on new home sales.
There’s been a lot of discussion about DCs lately — this is exactly why they matter. Without those DCs, that $4.5 million would fall directly onto existing taxpayers. That’s not fair — and it’s not how responsible municipalities operate.
This is an important infrastructure improvement, funded responsibly, that delivers real results for our residents.
Safer streets. Better connections. A stronger community.

Yay, finally!!
Maybe one day we can get a sidewalk on Berczy St. From Mosley St to Metcalfe St. Lots of GO walkers on the road.
This is a fantastic and much needed project. While attending GW Williams High School in the late 70’s we lived on Bloomington Rd. In the spring and fall months, I often cycled to school and it was a nerve wracking experience. Both downhill in the morning and uphill in the afternoon.
