Construction Mitigation Plan – Highland Gate

Tom Mrakas

All development in Aurora is subject to the Town’s standard construction mitigation plan. The purpose of which is to minimize impacts of development on the community. Dust control, street cleaning, road access for work vehicles, grading… vibrations to neighbouring homes, flooding due to changes in topography – these are all impacts of development that need to be monitored at any construction site. The Highland Gate development is the first of its kind Aurora. It is a development that is intertwined among a stable neighbourhood and complete community where new housing and streets are being constructed in and among existing houses. Thus, the Town needs to make sure that everything possible is being done to make sure the least amount of disruption for our residents. We have heard of concerns from other sites currently under construction, that are not nearly as close to existing neighbourhoods, where residents have experienced vibrations, dust storms, mud and dirt dragged through the streets and use of streets by construction vehicles and equipment that are supposed to be off limits. This is why we need to make sure that the Town’s standards with respect to construction mitigation are being adhered to and this is why I worked with Councillor Gaertner to have this report come to Council … after some long conversation about the motion the mayor felt the need to remind us that this report was just being received for information and then asked if the level of scrutiny that we have asked for from the Highland Gate Developer will be applied to all developers… Well I answered him quickly…. Here is what I said..
